What drives cost

  • Capacity above 5,000

Bigger crowds need beam fixtures that read from the back of the field, more strobe channels and louder atmospheric effects. Rig spec and crew count scale with the capacity, not just the headline act.

  • Outdoor vs indoor

Outdoor adds ground support trussing, weather-rated power distribution and IP-rated fixtures. A 30–50 percent uplift over an indoor brief of equivalent fixture count is typical for the same content.

  • Class 4 lasers with audience scanning

Audience-scanning needs MPE calculations to BS EN 60825, beam-termination drawings, a Laser Safety Officer on the day and a method statement signed before doors. That paperwork is built into the line, not added later.

  • Projection mapping with bespoke content

Mapping playback is one line — content development is another. We run playback in disguise, Resolume or MadMapper from supplied files. Original content from a motion design studio is quoted separately.

  • Multi-day build and pre-rig

Pre-rig days, rehearsal days, weather standby days and strike days each carry their own day rate. We quote each day separately so the schedule is transparent before contract.

  • EU touring and carnet handling

EU legs add ATA carnet paperwork, owned-fleet transport, crew accommodation and per-diem rates by territory. The total is quoted per leg, not stacked on a day rate.

Dry hire vs full production — why the line is different

  • Dry hire

Kit arrives in a van. You provide the designer, the programmer, the operator, the build crew and the paperwork. Lowest invoice line, highest operator risk on your side.

  • Hybrid (kit + tech)

Kit plus a single technician who runs setup. You still own the design and the show file. Works for small briefs, breaks down past 1,000-capacity rooms.

  • Full production (LightMax)

One brief, one quote, one truck, one team. Design, pre-vis, build, programming, operate, strike. Two operators above 1,000 cap. CSCS crew. RAMS and LSO sign-off included. No middlemen, no margin stacking.

Why LightMax vs cheaper alternatives

  • Two operators on every show above 1,000-capacity — one always on the desk through the set
  • CSCS-carded crew on every build, structural sign-off on builds above 4m
  • Laser Safety Officer attendance and BS EN 60825 calcs included on Class 4 shows
  • Owned fleet, owned warehouse — no cross-hire panic and no third-party freight margin
  • Fixed quote against the brief — changes go through signed change orders only
  • ATA carnet and EU customs paperwork handled in-house on tour legs
